Educational goals
An undergraduate study programme, the Textile Technologies, Materials and Nanomaterials course covers with its two specializations the entire textile industry field. The course’s objective is to train university-educated experts in the areas of textile and special fabrics, textile metrology, textile technologies (spinning, weaving, knitting, treatment and production of non-woven textiles) for technical purposes such as residential, health care, construction, protective, sport and other applications as well as fashion. The course provides the theoretical connections necessary for the development and innovation of technological processes and the preparation and implementation of high order innovation outputs. Students will acquire not only theoretical and practical knowledge on this level, but also enough flexibility, an ability to communicate about industry-specific topics in English, an understanding of technical fields and a set of what is comprehensively referred to as soft skills. For enhanced job opportunities in relation to the implementation of innovations as part of the Industry 4.0 trend much emphasis is placed on obtaining practical skills and experience. Throughout the course students will attend a range of various practical courses taught interactively in pilot production and specialist laboratories at FT TUL under the umbrella of specialist and expert subjects. With its chronic shortage of qualified engineering graduates, the labour market is certain to appreciate such practical skills. The course includes a 240-hour compulsory work experience programme which extends university studies to on-site training.
Profile of the graduate
The course will provide graduates with a range of knowledge in the field of all textile technologies regarding both modern as well as conventional processes and procedures and their theoretical connections. They will also obtain a comprehensive understanding of fibrous materials used in the apparel and industrial areas, with emphasis placed on their structure, properties and various ways of application. They will be aware of the theoretical foundations of descriptions and behaviour of textile structures including the units and relations applied. They will also be adequately knowledgeable and familiar with the field of technical textiles, their production technology, functionalisation and industrial application purposes and the development of new products particularly in the automotive, medical, health and safety and construction industries. They will be able to operate equipment for testing fibre structures and understand the testing methodology. They will have command of the specialist textile industry-related terminology and be able to independently acquire new information from the field of materials and technologies. Their thorough knowledge of the industry will allow them to master also new and unconventional materials and procedures brought about through development in this area. Their career opportunities will include middle management and development sections in companies dealing with the processing of textiles or materials containing fibres and their expert competencies will also be applicable in purchasing and testing of textile materials and products. They will be prepared to continue their studies in master’s degree programmes at the Faculty of Textile Engineering or in other engineering fields. The objective of the course is to provide graduates with not only engineering and industry-specific knowledge but also the theoretical connections needed in the development and innovation of technological processes and the preparation and implementation of high-order innovation outputs
